The OSRL Bomber Division has been one of the most contested series here at OSRL since it's debut 2 seasons ago. Last season we had no less than 8 winners in 10 races. Tommy Patton broke through with his first win of the season in the next to the last race on the 2008-C schedule, but wouldn't wait that long before finding victory lane this time around! With the bombers scheduled to visit dirt no less than 3 times this season, it was a great test of skill and patience to see who could master the dirt at Eldora.
With the top 3 in points not allowed to qualify, Mike Dolley would take advantage and start from the pole in the 61 car. The 28 of Steven Littrell started 2nd, with 101 Travis Wright, 4 Tommy Patton and 11 Frank Albert rounding out the top 5 starters. As the race got underway, it was obvious tire wear was not an issue tonight, and fuel mileage would be the key to staying out front. No less than 5 drivers lead laps throughout the night, with Tommy Patton leading the most with 50. Frank Albert in the 11 had a good run going out front leading 19 laps, but a costly green flag pit stop for fuel and then the subsequent caution would cost him a chance at victory. Frank finished the first car 1 lap down in 6th.
When the dust settled, it came down to a 10 lap shootout between leader Tommy Patton, the 6 of Robert Vining, 101 of Travis Wright, 28 Steven Littrell and 51 Brian Roberts duking it out to the checkers. Tommy had no 4th gear, but was holding his own on the bottom, Robert Vining decided to try the high side and actually pulled up along side Tommy with just 3 laps to go. Travis Wright in third was all over their bumpers just waiting for a mistake or a hole to open up, when Robert pushed high in 1 and 2 allowing Tommy to get away, and Travis to sneak inside.
As they came around to get 2 to go, the 51 of Brian Roberts got tapped in the rear by a lapped car, sending him spinning out of 4th place, and allowing Steven Littrell to takeover the 4th spot, putting Brian back to 5th and bringing out the caution flag. As the leaders came off of 4 to get the caution, it was Tommy Patton in the 4 car first to the line, with Travis Wright and Robert Vining battling door to door for second. But after a close review by race officials, it was determined that Robert held off Travis for second, but only by the length of a bumper!
The points battle is tight only 3 races into the season, but that's no surprise for the OSRL Bomber Division, as Joe Wilson secured the championship last season by only 8 points over Tommy Patton and Shayne Carr, who tied for second! The action is always great in this series, and this race was no different, as OSRL race officials announced that they have put the wheels in motion to bring dirt racing to the OSRL next season, so stay tuned!
